    The History of Ompuri

Sundaram, the renowned poet of Gujarat, became a disciple of Sri Aurobindo of Pondicherry Ashram. Sri Aurobindo made him an Ashramite. He translated into Gujarati the English Booklet "Ideal Child" by the Mother and distributed it throughout Gujarat. As a result of this, all persons aspiring for Sri Aurobindo's Yoga started meeting around Sundaram in 'Sri Aurobindo Shibir' at various places of Gujarat.

In the Shibir at Gangnath on the Narmada riverbank, in November 1967, a prayer was formulated to grant a Yoga-town like Auroville in Gujarat. The prayer was accepted by the Mother on 1.12.67 and She blessed and named the town as 'Ompuri' and gave it written in her own handwriting in English and in Sanskrit as well. After a prolonged survey of the whole of Gujarat under the guidance of Sundaram, the Ompuri site was selected on the riverbank of Vatrak in Kheda District.
