    The Mother

    (1878–1973)

"I belong to no nation, no civilization, no society, no race, but to the Divine."
    — The Mother

The Mother (Mirra Alfassa, 1878–1973) was born in Paris and recognized Sri Aurobindo as her spiritual collaborator when she met him in 1914.

In 1920, she settled permanently in Pondicherry, where together they founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Entrusted with full spiritual and material charge, she worked for nearly 50 years to manifest Sri Aurobindo's vision.

She blessed Ompuri as a centre for collective spiritual growth, embodying the four aspects of her divine nature in the design of the Mahamandir.

    The Collaborator

From their first meeting, the Mother recognized Sri Aurobindo as her spiritual equal and collaborator. Together, they worked to establish a new consciousness on earth and prepare humanity for its next evolutionary step.

    The Builder

The Mother took charge of the practical aspects of Sri Aurobindo's work, building the Ashram from a small group into a thriving spiritual community that continues to inspire seekers worldwide.

    The Teacher

Through her talks, writings, and personal guidance, the Mother taught the practical application of Integral Yoga, showing how to transform ordinary life into an instrument of the Divine.

    The Blessing for Ompuri

The Mother blessed Ompuri as a place where her four powers – Wisdom, Strength, Harmony, and Perfection – could manifest in collective spiritual life, creating a model for Divine living.
